Erosion of Rights and Judicial Pressure Threaten Democratic Stability, Warns PTI Leader

A senior Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader today characterized ongoing judicial reforms as a deliberate attempt at “political engineering,” warning that mounting pressure on the judiciary and a systematic erosion of fundamental rights are jeopardizing the country’s democratic stability.

In a statement issued from Karachi, Advocate Hasnain Ali Chohan, a prominent legal expert and PTI leader, asserted that violations of civil liberties, restrictions on political activities, and curbs on freedom of expression have become routine, constituting a clear breach of Articles 9, 10-A, 19, and 25 of the Constitution.

Chohan argued that the prevailing environment, marked by coercion on courts, limited public access to justice, and fabricated cases against political workers, is actively weakening the democratic system. He maintained that state stability and the restoration of public trust are impossible without the rule of law.

The legal expert also criticized the 26th and 27th constitutional amendments, claiming they were introduced to advance specific political agendas rather than serve the public interest. He pointed to the severe economic distress faced by citizens, citing “unprecedented inflation” and unemployment, which he contrasted with the continued emergence of large-scale corruption scandals.

He further contended that the International Monetary Fund”s (IMF) observations regarding corruption serve as “clear evidence” of the incompetence and failed governance of the current “illegitimate rulers.”

Chohan concluded with a warning that any attempt to weaken the Constitution poses a grave threat to the nation’s future. He demanded that the judiciary be allowed to function independently, that fundamental rights be restored without delay, and that all politically motivated cases be withdrawn.
