Gilani Extends Christmas Wishes, Highlights Legislative Action to Protect Minority Rights

Chairman of the Senate, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, on Thursday underscored Pakistan’s commitment to safeguarding minority rights through constitutional guarantees and legislative action, while extending heartfelt Christmas greetings to the Christian community globally.

In his message marking the occasion, Gilani described Christmas as a celebration with profound significance, conveying a universal message of peace, affection, and fellowship. He emphasised the promotion of interfaith harmony, calling respect for differing beliefs and traditions a collective duty essential for societal progress and prosperity.

The Senate Chairman affirmed that Pakistan is a nation that firmly believes in religious coexistence, where minorities are afforded complete religious freedom as guaranteed by the country”s constitution. He recalled his tenure as Prime Minister, during which a dedicated ministry for minority affairs was formed and non-majority communities were given representation in the federal cabinet to ensure their involvement in decision-making.

Gilani acknowledged the valuable contributions of minority communities towards the nation’s development, stability, and prosperity. He noted that the Upper House of Parliament has passed important legislation to protect minority rights and provide relief, which he described as a reflection of an inclusive and robust democratic system.

He further pointed to specific institutional mechanisms, such as the establishment of the Parliamentary Committee on the Minority Caucus, designed to address issues faced by these communities. He also praised the Senate”s commendable initiatives in this regard. The Chairman expressed his confidence that the Christian community would persist in its constructive role in advancing Pakistan”s progress and peace.

Concluding his statement, Gilani reiterated that collective efforts are vital for social welfare and for transforming the world into a “cradle of peace.” He added that tangible measures are underway to preserve Pakistan”s rich religious and cultural heritage as a symbol of national unity and a harmonious society.
