Sindh Provincial Minister for Prisons, Ali Hassan Zardari, after a comprehensive inspection of District Jail Thatta on Tuesday, issued immediate instructions to provide legal aid at government expense to all prisoners deprived of legal representation. The minister’s initiative aims to ensure timely and fair justice for those inmates who cannot afford to hire a lawyer.
During his visit, which included an inspection of the barracks, kitchen, and hospital ward, Minister Zardari assessed the quality of cleanliness, food supply, and medical services. He directed the jail administration to make further improvements and stressed that the human dignity of prisoners should be respected in all facilities. Chairman of the District Council Abdul Hameed Panhwar was also present on the occasion.
Mr. Zardari met directly with the prisoners and listened to their grievances regarding their ongoing cases, legal proceedings, and other personal issues. Responding to their complaints, he ordered the relevant authorities to resolve these matters on a priority basis.
The provincial minister said that prisoners are also citizens with constitutional and legal rights, and affirmed that the Sindh government is taking significant steps for their welfare. He highlighted that reforms in prisons are a key priority for the government, under which various projects are underway to create a better environment for prisoners and bring about positive changes in their lives.
He added that a strict monitoring system is being implemented to promote transparency, eliminate corruption, and ensure the prompt redressal of prisoners’ grievances.
The jail authorities, led by the Jail Superintendent, gave a detailed briefing to the minister on the overall situation of the jail, the number of prisoners, the nature of their cases, and the current reform measures. Mr. Zardari expressed satisfaction and also gave suggestions for further improvements, directing the staff to maintain a professional attitude with the prisoners and take immediate action on any complaint.
At the end of his visit, Minister Zardari reiterated the Sindh government’s commitment to protecting the rights of all prisoners and ensuring the provision of legal facilities to strengthen the process of delivering justice.
