Alarming Rise in Fatal Fires in Karachi Claims 83 Lives in Jan: Report

A staggering 83 people, including two children and eight women, lost their lives in 225 separate fire incidents that swept across the provincial capital during January 2026, according to a new report that highlights escalating concerns over public safety today.

The grim statistics, compiled by the rehabilitation department under Rescue 1122 Sindh, also noted that 24 individuals were injured and received immediate medical assistance.

Adviser to the Sindh Chief Minister for Rehabilitation, Giyanchand Essrani, identified a massive blaze at Gul Plaza on M.A. Jinnah Road as the most tragic and dangerous event. He stated that rescue teams and firefighters responded promptly to the emergency, launching a prolonged operation to bring the fire under control and safely evacuate multiple citizens who were trapped inside the building.

A district-wise analysis of the fires revealed that District Central recorded the highest number of emergencies with 30 incidents. Following this, Saddar, Sohrab Goth, and Gulberg each reported 18 cases, while 14 were registered in Manzoor Colony, underscoring the urgent need for improved safety arrangements.

Further data showed 13 blazes each in Nazimabad and New Karachi, 11 in the SITE industrial area, and nine each in Lyari and Korangi. Orangi Town and Shah Faisal Colony experienced eight incidents apiece, with Landhi reporting three.

Expressing deep concern over the escalating number of fires, the adviser stressed that protecting human life remains the government’s foremost priority and all relevant departments have been instructed to strengthen their emergency response mechanisms. Mr Essrani urged citizens, traders, and building administrators to rigorously implement fire prevention protocols, ensure emergency exits remain functional, and conduct regular inspections of safety equipment to minimise potential losses.

He added that the administration is also focusing on public awareness campaigns, training programmes, and enhancing the operational capacity of rescue services. Officials advised the public to immediately contact the 1122 emergency helpline during any crisis to enable timely intervention and safeguard lives and property.
