Islamabad: Despite decades of various economic strategies, per capita income in Pakistan remains stagnant at around $1,500, according to Shahid Rasheed Butt, a prominent business leader and former president of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce. Butt argues that true prosperity is still elusive for many, as public incomes continue to fall despite proclaimed GDP growth.
According to Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Butt emphasized that real economic development should focus on improving the income and quality of life for ordinary citizens, not just GDP growth. Pakistan's economic progress has been hindered by rapid population growth, low productivity, and structural issues, which have exacerbated inflationary pressures on the population.
Butt highlighted the difference between economic growth and development, noting that GDP reflects economic size but not the distribution of income. He emphasized the challenges posed by rising costs in essential sectors like food, transportation, and energy, which contribute to public hardships. Many rural and underdeveloped areas still lack adequate healthcare, education, and basic services, with a significant portion of the population living below the poverty line.
Drawing comparisons with countries like Vietnam, Bangladesh, India, and Turkey, Butt pointed out that these nations have achieved significant income gains through export-driven industries, technological advancements, and increased productivity. Similarly, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have progressed by diversifying their economies and effectively utilizing natural resources.
In Pakistan, Butt identified energy costs, complex regulations, inadequate infrastructure, and inconsistent policies as major business impediments. He also noted a serious shortage of skilled labor. He urged the government to prioritize policies that enhance exports, industrial growth, technology investment, and human capital development. Butt warned that without good governance, transparency, and accountability, economic policies would fail to deliver real income gains and public prosperity, leaving Pakistan far from achieving per capita prosperity.
