Political – [ [Economic, Social] ] United presented Pakistan’s shadow budget, committed to resolving economic stagnation

Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) presented its shadow budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 today, highlighting the severe economic conditions facing the country and offering alternative solutions aimed at reviving the nation’s stagnant economy.

Dr. Farooq Sattar, representing MQM-P, emphasized that Pakistan’s economic sovereignty is essential for the nation’s survival. He noted that diplomatic efforts under the leadership of General Asif Munir and the Prime Minister have garnered global attention, but the economic condition of the country’s 250 million citizens remains dire.

The shadow budget is designed to provide a roadmap for economic recovery, highlighting the importance of local investment as a catalyst for growth. Dr. Sattar pointed out that improved geopolitical conditions should now be beneficial for accelerating economic development.

A significant issue raised in the budget presentation was the lack of representation for farmers and workers in parliament due to the dominance of landlords and landowners. According to Sattar, this imbalance is stifling the economic power of these crucial sectors.

MQM-P proposes a people-centric budget that prioritizes the needs of ordinary citizens. The party’s plan seeks to enhance the purchasing power of Pakistanis, which has drastically fallen. Areas like Orangi Town and Lyari exemplify the struggle, where families face choices between basic necessities such as medicine and flour.

The shadow budget advocates a tax policy targeting major investors instead of the general public, aligning with MQM-P’s commitment to supporting farmers, peasants, and landowners.

Through these proposals, MQM-P attempts to facilitate Pakistan’s journey towards achieving economic sovereignty, ensuring that the interests of the common man are at the center of national economic policy.
