Pakistan’s newly formed Emergency Response Committee held its inaugural meeting on Friday to assess the country’s preparedness for the 2026 monsoon season, reviewing potential weather-related threats, flood risks and emergency response measures aimed at reducing the impact of seasonal rains.
The meeting, convened on the directives of the prime minister, was chaired virtually by Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal. Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman and senior representatives from relevant federal institutions also participated.
Officials briefed the committee on projected weather patterns, anticipated flood hazards and the national preparedness framework for the upcoming monsoon. Participants were informed that the NDMA would serve as the committee’s secretariat and coordinate its activities.
The committee examined the possible effects of heavy rainfall on agricultural output, water reservoirs and key national infrastructure, stressing the importance of safeguarding critical sectors against climate-related risks.
To strengthen disaster management, the committee approved the inclusion of all provincial chief secretaries as its members, a move intended to improve coordination between the federal and provincial governments during emergency situations.
Members underscored the need for seamless coordination, rapid information sharing and an effective response mechanism among federal agencies, provincial administrations and other relevant institutions throughout the monsoon season.
The committee reaffirmed its commitment to implementing a unified national strategy designed to protect lives, safeguard property and minimize losses arising from the 2026 monsoon season.
