In view of the growing tensions between Iran and the United States, former President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Sardar Masood Khan has emphasized the importance of diplomacy to prevent a wider regional conflict. He stressed that Pakistan, along with other regional players, should actively engage in mediation efforts to promote a peaceful solution.
In a statement today, Sardar Masood Khan highlighted the dangerous escalation of hostilities, which are now threatening civilian populations and critical infrastructure beyond military sites. The former ambassador to the United States, China, and the United Nations warned that such developments could exacerbate human suffering, destabilize the Middle East, and severely impact the global economy.
Khan praised Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts, noting that Islamabad is playing a crucial role in facilitating dialogue between Tehran and Washington. He mentioned that recent talks with key regional partners demonstrate a collective effort to prevent further conflict. He appreciated Iran’s approach to balancing diplomacy and national defense and encouraged all parties involved to adopt a similar stance.
Speaking about the shifting security dynamics in the Gulf, Khan warned that the conflict could potentially escalate, affecting vital maritime channels such as the Bab al-Mandab Strait. He noted that this could disrupt international trade, increase energy prices, and threaten global economic stability. He urged regional countries to exercise restraint and prevent the spillover of conflict into neighboring areas.
Regarding the political environment in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Khan supported the decision to hold phased elections, calling it a wise move given the current circumstances. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and public confidence and ensuring that debates on constitutional matters continue within the legislative assembly.
Addressing the political landscape in India, Khan said that changes within political parties are unlikely to immediately alter India’s strategic outlook. He observed that ideologies associated with Hindutva have extended beyond electoral outcomes into state institutions and society. For sustainable peace, he advocated for policies based on plurality and minority rights rather than exclusionary nationalism.
Finally, Sardar Masood Khan urged Pakistan to continue its diplomatic engagements and safeguard regional stability. He stated that negotiations, constitutional governance, and peaceful dialogue are the most effective tools for conflict resolution and long-term peace in South Asia and the Middle East.
