Cabinet Approves Inquiry into Former Minister’s Comments on PIA Pilots

Islamabad: The Federal Cabinet has sanctioned the creation of a fact-finding committee to examine the motives behind a controversial statement made by a former minister concerning Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) pilots. The decision, made at a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, aims to address reputational and financial damages allegedly caused by the statement.

According to a statement by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the cabinet was briefed on the statement delivered in Parliament in 2020, which was deemed irresponsible and exaggerated. The remarks reportedly harmed the country’s image along with that of the national flag carrier, resulting in substantial financial losses to the national treasury.

In addition to investigating the statement’s motives, the committee will assess the financial impact on both the national airline and the treasury. This inquiry seeks to hold accountable those responsible for the alleged damages.

The cabinet also approved a 25 percent reduction in the provincial quota for Federal Government-administered medical and dental colleges. This adjustment aims to enhance educational opportunities for students with an Islamabad domicile, who face limited quotas in provincial institutions.

Further decisions included the approval of the Off the Grid Captive Power Plants Levy Ordinance 2025 and endorsement of the Middle East Green Initiative Charter. As a founding member of the charter, Pakistan commits to restoring 200 million hectares of land and planting 50 billion trees.

Additionally, the cabinet granted approval for an agreement on tariff rate quotas between the Government of Pakistan and the European Union, highlighting ongoing trade cooperation.
