SHCC forms squads to tackle quackery

KARACHI:Chief Executive Officer, Sindh Healthcare Commission (SHCC) Dr Minhaj Qidwai and Director Anti-Quackery Directorate SHCC Dr Ayaz Mustafa held a meeting with the newly notified focal persons of anti-quackery to deal with the menace of quackery in Sindh province.

Qidwai and Mustafa also attended a meeting chaired by Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on National Health Services (NHS) Dr Zafar Mirza in Larkana. Health Minister Sindh Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho, Country Head World Health Organization (WHO) and other international partners and stakeholders were also present.

The SHCC teams presented and discussed anti-quackery plan and strategies for controlling outbreak of HIV/AIDS. Directorate of Anti-Quackery SHCC has sealed over 820 Healthcare Establishments (HCEs) across the province out of which 160 were clinics and labs in Larkana during anti-quackery drive. More than 650 health facilities were sealed from 29 April to 23 May 2019 throughout the province.

Directorate of Clinical Governance and Training SHCC had a meeting with lady health workers and Supervisor Vertical Program Coordinator Dr Shazia Baloch at Rural Health Center Baldia Town, Karachi. An awareness session was conducted by SHCC team for lady health workers for infection control, malpractices, misuse of syringes and injections.

Further plan was also discussed for infection control program with lady health workers.

Directorate of Licensing and Accreditation SHCC has received 269 new applications for registration in this week and certificates were issued to 74 HCEs in this week bringing total number of registration certificates issued to 4,726.

Directorate of Complaint SHCC has received 66 complaints till date out of which 38 were disposed of, 24 complaints are under process and four are subjudice.

The SHCC team has also conducted inspection at National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) against complaints received.

SHC orders preparation of psychological disordered patients data

KARACHI:Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday directed Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and Senior Superintends (SPs) of Police to form a data pertaining to the patients suffering from psychological disorders.

A two-member bench of the SHC heard a plea filed by Erum Shaheen against Sindh government for not providing government’s medical services to the patients of psychological disorders. The bench ordered the commissioners, DCs and SPs to get information of psychological disorder patients at public places, graveyards and tombs.

The bench also sought scores of detained psychological disordered patients from prisons of Sindh and directed the IGP Sindh to submit a list of patients suffering from such health problems.

The SHC questioned which facilities are being provided to psychological disordered patients by the Sindh health department. It also asked the all session judges to check the conditions of detained patients in prisons.

‘’It is the responsibility of the government to provide free medical services to those suffering from psychological disorders.’’ The bench remarked.

The petitioner, Erum Shaheen, stated before the bench that her sister was suffering from psychological disorder so she should be provided free medical services.

PPP believes in giving jobs on merit, claims minister

KARACHI:Sindh Minister for Labour and Human Resources Ghulam Murtaza Baloch said Friday that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) believes in giving jobs on merit and it is a matter of great pleasure that first time in the history of Sindh Social Security that the children of employees, who died during service, were being appointed on deceased quota.

This he said while distributing offer letters on deceased quota here at SESSI head office. On this occasion, Commissioner SESSI Kashif Gulzar, Director Admin Zahid Butt and others were also present. While welcoming the new comers, Baloch asked them to work hard and bring a good name to the department.

He said that gradually, the remaining posts on deceased quota would be filled after completion of formalities, adding that the federal government was depriving people of their employments, while Sindh government, following the vision of Asif Ali Zardari and Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, was providing jobs to the people.

He assured the labourers that Sindh Labour Department would protect their rights and strive hard to provide them better health care, education and safety facilities. On this occasion, he distributed 13 offer letters to the children of the employees, who died during service on deceased quota.

One killed, three injured in robbery incident

KARACHI:One person was killed and three others injured over resistance during a robbery bid in a Milk Shop in Orangi town area of the area of the metropolis on Friday.

According to police sources, a gang of four robbers, riding on two motorcycles, entered a milk shop near Iqbal Market in Orangi town No-11, and tried to loot cash and other valuables.

However, the owner of the shop and other people offered them resistance on which the robbers opened fire on them. As a result, a 60-year-old man, Khursheed son of Ibraheem, suffered bullet injuries and died on the spot, while three others Khalil, Gulbahar and Sarfaraz sustained injuries.

The body and injured were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for an autopsy and treatment, respectively.

Jinnah Sindh Medical University expands to nine institutes

KARACHI:“With the start of the latest Institute of Medical Education, Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) now has nine constituent units imparting undergraduate and postgraduate level education in medicine and allied health sciences,” said Prof Tariq Rafi, Vice Chancellor, JSMU, at an aftar dinner hosted for the media representatives.

He recounted the university’s journey from its beginning in 2012 with only Sindh Medical College as a constituent and applauded the efforts of his faculty and staff in working with dedication to achieve milestone after milestone in a short time of seven years.

“Our latest MPhil programme in clinical and histopathology has been designed keeping in mind the shortage of highly qualified pathologists in the country with a burgeoning population,” he said, “It is part of our vision and mission to produce competent and ethical healthcare professionals according to the needs of the healthcare sector in Sindh.” JSMU’s Institute of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation and College of Nursing have already started classes while the new Institute of Family Medicine is starting a service model outpatient clinic for the benefit of the masses.

JSMU’s dental out patients clinic at its Sindh Institute of Oral Health Sciences and its Diagnostics Laboratory are already catering to a large number of patients daily charging a nominal fee only.

Prof Tariq Rafi also briefed the press about the five-year plan JSMU has developed for Nagarparkar and Diplo for districts covering the issues of livelihood, livestocks, agriculture, drinking water, irrigation water, health education and other factors in the community.

JSMU teams visited these two assigned districts in Tharparkar according to Sindh government’s programme of uplifting the conditions in the desert and work to assess the needs of the population and provide free clinics and referrals.

IGP orders tightening security following Quetta blast

KARACHI:Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh Dr Syed Kaleem Imam has ordered that security arrangements be beefed up following the blast in Pashtoonabad Quetta on Friday.

A police statement here said that the IGP had directed officials to take extraordinary security steps at all important places in the metropolis including sensitive installations, government and semi-government buildings, religious places, railways stations, airports, industrial and commercial areas and shopping centers.

The IGP said that snap checking, patrolling, random checking and measures against crimes should be enhanced. He said the prevailing security situation needed extraordinary measures to deal with any untoward situation.

He also directed police force to wear bulletproof jackets for your security too.

Consul General JoAnne Wagner inaugurates Photo Exhibition about “Muslims in America”

KARACHI:United States Consul General in Karachi, JoAnne Wagner and Sindh Provincial Minister for Culture, Syed Sardar Shah inaugurated a photographic exhibition illustrating the lives of Muslims living in the United States of America, at the Lincoln Corner situated in the Liaquat National Memorial Library.

“The images in the exhibit demonstrate two founding principles of American society: those of tolerance of religious diversity; and freedom of religious practice. Americans are proud of their right to practice the religion of their choice, without any fear,” remarked Consul General JoAnne Wagner.

The United States is home to one of the most diverse Muslim populations in the world and the exhibition showcases the religious diversity and religious freedom in the United States.

The exhibit will remain open to the general public from 23 May to 4 June at the Lincoln Corner Karachi situated in the Liaquat National Memorial Library, Karachi.
