Despite being 96 per cent complete and nearing its public inauguration, the Rs 6.13 billion Korangi Causeway Bridge project has been flagged for several minor deficiencies, prompting immediate directives for their rectification from a provincial monitoring team.
According to Sindh CM House information on Sunday, following instructions from Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, an inspection of the crucial infrastructure scheme was conducted by the Monitoring and Evaluation (MEC) team of the Planning and Development Department, led by Director General Altaf Hussain Sario, to ensure adherence to quality and transparency standards.
The project, which has incurred 78 per cent of its financial expenditure, is anticipated to open for public use within the next few weeks, significantly ahead of its revised June 2026 completion timeline. The remaining minor tasks are scheduled to be finalised within three weeks.
During the comprehensive assessment of the 1.4-kilometre span, the monitoring team, in collaboration with the project’s technical staff and consultants, reviewed construction progress and conducted on-site quality assurance examinations. These included Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) via a Schmidt Hammer to confirm the compressive strength of the concrete.
While the overall work was deemed satisfactory, the MEC report identified specific areas requiring prompt attention. The executing agency has been instructed to install stone riprap to protect approach embankments, correct minor pavement marking errors, rectify an asphalt undulation at an expansion joint, and complete signposting to improve safety and aesthetics.
CM Shah has reiterated the provincial government”s uncompromising stance on the quality of public welfare projects, emphasising that engineering excellence and public safety are paramount.
He stressed that the Korangi Causeway Bridge is a significant project for improving urban connectivity in the metropolis and warned that any negligence in development schemes would be considered unacceptable.
