Court orders filing case against 12 accused for spreading false news

Based on the application of Badin resident Samreen Memon, a local court today ordered the filing of a case against 12 individuals accused of spreading false news on social media regarding the release of her father-in-law and brother-in-law.

Samreen had filed a petition in court accusing her father-in-law, Hassan Memon, and brother-in-law, Arman Memon, of sexual assault. She had expressed distrust in the police investigation, leading the court to order a reinvestigation.

Following the court’s decision, the accused and some social media activists disseminated false news on social media claiming the honorable acquittal of the father-in-law and brother-in-law. Samreen submitted an application to the court stating that this news is false and that she is being blackmailed and harassed.

The court ordered the police to investigate the matter and record statements. After the police report, the court ordered the filing of a case against the former father-in-law, brother-in-law, and 10 others under sections 500 and 505 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

In his judgment, Session Judge Muhammad Tahir Abbasi wrote that it is essential for journalists to verify news before publishing it. The court declared that false news is detrimental to the dignity of the court and public trust.
