Spokesperson for the Mayor of Karachi and Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentary Leader in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), Karamullah Waqasi, said on Thursday that, on the directives of Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation had been fully mobilised to provide maximum relief to citizens during the ongoing monsoon season.
He said that all available resources were being utilised to ensure the timely cleaning of major storm-water drains, improve the city’s drainage and sewerage systems, facilitate the swift disposal of rainwater, and maintain essential municipal services so that the blessings of the monsoon would not turn into hardship for the people of Karachi.
Waqasi said that Mayor Murtaza Wahab had issued clear instructions to complete the cleaning of all major drains within the stipulated timeframe to ensure that the city’s drainage network remained fully functional during the expected monsoon rains. He added that, for the first time, modern drone technology was being used to monitor the drain-cleaning operation, ensuring transparency, quality control, and continuous supervision. He said the technology would enable the authorities to closely monitor the pace and quality of work, leaving no room for negligence or delays.
He further said that, under the leadership of Mayor Murtaza Wahab, KMC had already activated its Monsoon Emergency Plan, with all relevant departments placed on high alert. A comprehensive strategy had been implemented to ensure the prompt drainage of rainwater, an effective emergency response, the availability of machinery, the deployment of operational staff, and the timely resolution of public complaints to minimise inconvenience to residents.
Highlighting broader development initiatives, Waqasi said that Karachi’s progress extended beyond sanitation campaigns and included major infrastructure improvement projects. In this regard, he said, Mayor Murtaza Wahab had recently visited the TP-1 Sewerage Treatment Plant in the SITE Industrial Area to review the project’s progress. He added that the state-of-the-art treatment plant, with a capacity of 35 million gallons per day (MGD), was expected to become operational by mid-July. Construction had been completed, and the testing phase was underway.
According to Waqasi, the TP-1 project would mark a significant milestone in Karachi’s environmental protection efforts, efficient water management, and industrial development. Once operational, the facility would supply treated wastewater to industries, reducing pressure on freshwater resources, promoting environmentally sustainable practices, and providing substantial benefits to the industrial sector.
He said that, under Mayor Murtaza Wahab’s leadership, KMC was pursuing long-term and sustainable solutions to the city’s civic challenges. Multiple projects related to sanitation, drainage, sewerage, infrastructure development, and modern municipal services were progressing rapidly to transform Karachi into a cleaner, more organised, and better-managed metropolitan city.
Appealing to the public, Waqasi emphasised that while KMC was fulfilling its responsibilities with full commitment, public cooperation was equally essential. He urged citizens not to dump garbage, construction debris, or any other waste into storm-water drains, as such practices obstruct the natural flow of water and aggravate urban flooding during heavy rainfall.
Reaffirming KMC’s commitment, Waqasi said that the municipal administration would continue taking every possible measure throughout the monsoon season to ensure uninterrupted drainage services, effective emergency preparedness, and improved civic facilities across all areas of Karachi. He stressed that the safety, convenience, and well-being of citizens remained the administration’s top priority, adding that every effort would be made to ensure that the monsoon season did not become a source of hardship for the people.
