The Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan, reiterated the government’s steadfast commitment to strengthening the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector, which plays a vital role in Pakistan’s economic structure.
Speaking during the “World Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Day 2026” event held in Islamabad today, Khan termed the SME sector as the backbone of the national economy and a fundamental component of the government’s economic reform plan.
He highlighted that there are approximately 7.14 million SMEs in Pakistan, making them the largest productive force in the country. These businesses contribute about 40% to the country’s GDP, account for 30% of exports, and provide employment to more than 80% of the non-agricultural workforce.
Khan announced the establishment of a dedicated “Development Fund” worth 30 billion rupees by the government. This initiative aims to support innovation and revolutionary measures designed to enhance business competitiveness, expand exports, and promote sustainable economic growth.
This commitment underscores the government’s pledge to recognize SMEs as a key factor in advancing economic stability and prosperity in Pakistan.
