FBR Enforces Tax Compliance with New Measures on Income Tax Returns

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has issued an Income Tax General Order (ITGO) to enforce the filing of returns for the Tax Year 2023, targeting individuals who have not complied with their tax obligations and are not listed on the active taxpayer list. According to Press Information Department, under the authority of section 114B of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, the FBR has directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and all telecom operators to disable mobile phone SIMs of 506,671 individuals who have failed to file their income tax returns. This action aims to prompt compliance and enhance the country’s tax base. The order mandates immediate enforcement, with telecom operators required to submit a compliance report to the FBR by May 15, 2024. This measure is part of broader efforts by the FBR to promote tax compliance and ensure a fair and equitable tax system in Pakistan. The FBR encourages affected individuals to promptly address their tax responsibilities by filing accurate returns to
restore their mobile services.
