Following Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification, Congress plans month-long protests

New Delhi, March 29, 2023 (PPI-OT): Following disqualification of former party president Rahul Gandhi, the Congress has planned a series of events to protest a range of issues like the Modi government’s silence on the Adani controversy, the misuse of central investigation agencies against opposition leaders, and the erosion of democracy in India. Congress spokesperson, Jairam Ramesh, however, maintained that the protests are not merely about Rahul Gandhi but about the Congress’s resolve “to protect the constitution and democracy”.

Congress General Secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal announced a series of events under the campaign “Jai Bharat Satyagraha” begun with a protest march from New Delhi’s Red Fort to Town Hall. Over the next month, various such protest events will be organised from the block to state levels, he said. Venugopal added that all arms of the Congress, including the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), Indian Youth Congress (IYC), All India Mahila Congress, Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes/Other Backward Classes /Minority departments will run poster campaigns and organise protests that involve sending postcards to the prime minister and gheraoing district collectors’ offices across all states.

Venugopal also said sympathisers and civil society activists will be invited to these protests to push forward the party’s primary demand that a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) should probe Adani-Modi links to clear the air around the allegations. Ramesh said that similar JPCs were constituted in 1992 and 2001.
