Health Minister fears coronavirus cases may increase in Sindh

Larkana:Provincial Health and Population Welfare Department Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho said on Saturday that coronavirus cases might increase in Sindh in second phase.

“Non-observance of social distancing has resulted in spread of the virus from one person to another, hence SOPs should be fully implemented to stop it from further spreading,” the minister said while talking to media persons after presiding over a high level meeting of health officials at the Commissioner’s office here today.

Pechuho said inquiry into the theft of government medicines was underway and stern action would be taken against those found responsible. She said the commissioner and deputy commissioner, Larkana, were watching the protest by members of Pakistan Paramedical Staff Association of Chandka Medical College Hospital and the issue would be resolved by them through talks.

The health minister said that an oxygen supply line would be laid at Shaikh Zayed Hospital for Women Larkana which was delayed due to a similar work was underway at Karachi and other cities. She claimed that there was no shortage of ventilators at Chandka Children Hospital as she herself had shifted them which were functioning at the moment.

She said: “We cannot post specialist cadre doctors as Medical Superintendents because of Supreme Court directives. She said the Board had been constituted under the Teaching Hospitals Management Act and its summary would soon be sent to Sindh Chief Minister for approval after which further improvement would be visible in the teaching hospitals.

Earlier, she presided over a meeting of health officers of Larkana division in which she directed for taking all out efforts to make the ongoing anti-polio campaign successful. She warned the participating District Health Officers (DHOs), PPHI and IHS officials that no negligence in this connection would be tolerated.

During the meeting, she was informed about the shortage of dog bite vaccine ARV in Jacobabad district. She contacted CEOs of PPHI and IHS and directed them to ensure availability of the vaccine at all the healthcare facilities across the district and province. The meeting was also participated by Larkana division commissioner Salim Raza Khuhro, all five deputy commissioners, all DHOs and other relevant officers.
