Iran Reverses World Cup 2026 Boycott Following FIFA Intervention

Iran has reversed its decision to boycott the FIFA World Cup 2026 following successful diplomatic efforts by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, a development that has been warmly welcomed by football supporters, according to the head of a sports management company.

In a statement today, Rais Khan, Chief Executive of RK Sports Management, revealed that his organisation had directly appealed to the FIFA President after Iran first announced its intention to withdraw from the global tournament.

‘We are grateful to the FIFA President for responding promptly to our appeal. He, along with his team, met officials of the Iran Football Federation in Turkey and persuaded them to take part in the World Cup,’ Khan stated.

He commended the Iranian football body for making a ‘courageous decision’ to compete, particularly in light of the ‘prevailing war-like situation.’ Khan noted that the news of Iran’s inclusion has been met with happiness among football enthusiasts.

According to Khan, the presence of the Iranian team will enhance the competitive environment of the tournament and promises to deliver thrilling matches for spectators. He acknowledged that organising the event successfully will be a ‘major challenge’ for FIFA under the current circumstances, referencing the ongoing situation in the Middle East.

However, Khan expressed his hope that the FIFA President and his administration would utilise all available efforts to ensure a successful tournament is delivered.
