Karachi, In a significant step towards sustainable urban development, the Mayor of Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, and the MD and CEO of Pakistan State Oil (PSO), Syed Muhammad Taha, have inaugurated the PSO ECO STREET around PSO House in Clifton. This initiative marks a groundbreaking move to combat plastic waste through the conversion of approximately 49,428 square feet of traditional road into a durable, plastic-based pavement, utilizing 5,000 kg of recycled plastic waste, primarily from lubricant bottles and cans collected from PSO's facilities.
According to Pakistan State Oil, the PSO ECO STREET initiative stands as a beacon of progress in the city's efforts to address environmental challenges head-on. The project not only aims to significantly reduce the plastic footprint but also to showcase the practical benefits and viability of incorporating recycled materials into infrastructure development. By repurposing plastic waste for road construction, the initiative underscores the potential for sustainable practices to enhance urban living conditions while also contributing to the longevity and durability of road infrastructure.
During the inauguration, Barrister Murtaza Wahab lauded the project for its contribution to the city's beautification and its role in demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement. He highlighted the project as a model for corporate social responsibility, encouraging other entities to invest in the development of the community.
The initiative also includes a comprehensive beautification effort surrounding the new road, with the renovation of road medians and walkways to create more inviting spaces for pedestrians. These areas have been enhanced with indigenous plants and trees, contributing to local biodiversity and offering a greener, more pleasant urban environment.
Syed Muhammad Taha expressed PSO's dedication to environmental conservation and sustainability, emphasizing the company's role in leading by example with innovative solutions to environmental challenges. He remarked on the importance of caring for our environment as responsible stewards, with the ECO STREET initiative reflecting PSO's commitment to making a positive impact on the community and the planet.
The project further extends its sustainability efforts through the installation of electric poles equipped with energy-efficient LED lighting, aiming to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. Additionally, the area has been outfitted with new zebra crossings, lane markings, speed breakers, and signboards, ensuring safer and clearer navigation for travelers.
This vibrant transformation of the roadway into a model of eco-friendly infrastructure exemplifies PSO's broader commitment to green initiatives. It serves as an inspiring example of how innovative solutions can effectively reduce environmental footprints while promoting sustainable and responsible infrastructure development.
PSO expressed gratitude towards all stakeholders, including local authorities, community members, and project partners, for their support and collaboration in bringing the PSO ECO STREET initiative to fruition.
