In a significant move to combat rising militancy, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has announced the convening of a ‘Peace Jirga’ within the provincial assembly, aiming to unite a diverse group of stakeholders to formulate a joint strategy for eradicating terrorism and securing lasting stability in the region.
The decision was unveiled following a crucial session of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) senior leadership at the Chief Minister’s House on Saturday. The high-level consultation included PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan, Chief Minister Afridi, Junaid Akbar, Asad Qaiser, and other prominent party figures.
During the gathering, participants conducted a thorough review of the province’s overall law and order situation. The recent bomb blasts in Hangu were a key point of discussion, with the leadership expressing profound sorrow and offering prayers for the martyred police personnel while paying tribute to their ultimate sacrifice.
Chief Minister Afridi reaffirmed the provincial government’s unwavering support for the police force. He underscored that equipping law enforcement with modern technology, advanced training, and sufficient resources remains a principal priority for his administration.
The forthcoming Peace Jirga is set to bring together an inclusive assembly of former chief ministers, governors, religious scholars, and tribal elders. Representatives from civil society, the legal community, and other influential figures will also be invited to contribute to developing a comprehensive, consensus-based approach to ensure sustainable peace throughout Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
