Prominent Malaysian civil society figures and academics, speaking at a Kashmir Solidarity Day event today, called upon the United Nations and the global community to facilitate a free and impartial plebiscite to resolve the long-standing Kashmir dispute, citing what they termed as “historic injustices” faced by the region”s populace.
The gathering, held at the High Commission of Pakistan, was organised to express solidarity with the people of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. The ceremony drew a diverse audience including representatives from local think tanks, academic institutions, civil society organisations, media personnel, and members of the Pakistani community.
Key speakers at the function asserted that a resolution to the conflict could only be achieved by implementing United Nations Security Council Resolutions that allow the people of Kashmir to determine their own future. They stressed that the people of Malaysia and the Muslim Ummah stand firmly in allegiance with the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Among the distinguished speakers were Cikgu Azmi Abdul Hamid, President of the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations; Chua Tian Chang, a former Member of Parliament and social activist; and Professor Dr. Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid of University Sains Malaysia and the University of Malaya. Other notable attendees included Tuan Haji Mohd Jamaludin Shamsudin, CEO of the Allied Coordinating Committee of Islamic NGOs (ACCIN), and Datuk Mustafa Kamil Bin Ayoub, Chairman of the National Institute of Entrepreneurship (INSKEN).
In his address, Pakistan”s High Commissioner, Syed Ahsan Raza Shah, reiterated his country”s unwavering political, diplomatic, and moral support for what he described as the Kashmiris” “just struggle for freedom against Indian occupation.” The High Commissioner also expressed his gratitude to the Malaysian government and its scholars for their principled stance on the issue.
The event also featured a photographic exhibition. Participants viewed a collection of images depicting alleged human rights violations and atrocities attributed to Indian security forces in the disputed territory.
