Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has ordered the immediate establishment of independent vigilance teams to patrol the city’s main thoroughfares, mandating that all minor and medium-sized road repairs be completed within 24 hours of identification.
According to Karachi Mayor office information today, Wahab issued a stern warning of strict action against the Engineering Department for any failure to comply with the new directive. The directive was issued during a high-level review meeting of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Engineering Department, where the Mayor stressed a proactive approach to civic maintenance.
These newly formed vigilance squads are tasked with regularly inspecting major arteries and will be required to submit progress reports and updates directly to higher authorities. This system is designed to identify and resolve issues without waiting for public complaints or official intimation.
‘This is the responsibility of officials, not citizens, to identify and report petty road-related issues,’ the Mayor asserted. ‘Every district must have an active vigilance team to ensure that problems are resolved within 24 hours.’
Mayor Wahab confirmed that the necessary resources are already in place, noting that separate emergency tenders for minor repair works have been executed using funds allocated from municipal taxes. He emphasized that with both personnel and funding available, there should be no delays in resolving complaints.
During the meeting, officials also briefed the chair on the status of various city-wide development initiatives. Senior engineering officials reported that mega projects under CLICK funding have reached a mature stage, with progress exceeding 70 percent. Several of these key projects are anticipated to be inaugurated before March.
It was also noted that funds allocated for two quarters of the Provincial Annual Development Programme (ADP) schemes have been almost entirely utilized, with remaining works proceeding according to prescribed timelines. The Mayor specifically directed departments to expedite all codal formalities for schemes on Natha Khan Road and Jahangir Road.
Reiterating his administration’s commitment, Barrister Murtaza Wahab stated, ‘Citizens have high expectations from us, and we have already begun delivering tangible improvements across the city. Our focus remains on timely execution, transparency, and visible progress.’
The meeting was attended by Municipal Commissioner KMC Syed Mohammad Afzal Zaidi, Financial Advisor KMC Gulzar Abro, Senior Director Engineering Junaid Ullah Khan, and Senior Director Coordination to the Mayor Akhlaq Ahmed, among other senior officials.
