National Assembly (NA) Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has ordered the swift completion of 104 additional family suites at the Parliament Lodges, a critical infrastructure project that has been stagnant for more than a decade. The Speaker made the directive during a surprise inspection on Friday to assess the progress of the undertaking, which was originally slated for completion in 2013.

The initiative, first launched in 2011, faced extensive setbacks attributed to the negligence of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the contractor. Officials briefing the Speaker noted that the project’s revival was a direct result of his personal intervention.

Taking a keen interest in the long-pending scheme, Speaker Sadiq had earlier appealed to Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif to approve financing for its immediate resumption. Following the request, the Prime Minister instructed the Ministry of Finance to release the required funds, enabling work to restart on the halted construction.

During his tour of the site, Speaker Sadiq emphasized to CDA authorities and the project team that there would be no tolerance for compromises on construction quality or timelines. He stressed that ensuring the highest standards was paramount for the successful finalization of the suites and accompanying servant quarters.

He highlighted that the prolonged stagnation of the project had created significant accommodation difficulties for Members of Parliament. Resolving this housing shortage remains a top priority, the Speaker affirmed.

In response, CDA representatives gave their assurance that the construction is now firmly back on track. They provided a revised schedule, projecting that the family suites would be ready by June 2026.

With the Speaker’s continuous supervision and follow-up, the much-delayed initiative has finally entered its concluding phase, offering hope for timely relief to parliamentarians facing housing constraints.
