In a landmark move, Lt. General (R) Nazir Ahmed Butt, Chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), inaugurated the NAB Facilitation Desk at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI).
Attendees included LCCI President Mian Abuzar Shad and other prominent figures from the business community. The Chairman assured the business community of NAB’s unwavering support, emphasizing the bureau’s commitment to removing barriers hindering economic growth.
During his address, Chairman Butt reflected on the challenges faced when he assumed office two years ago, noting that immediate reforms led to significant institutional improvements. He highlighted the introduction of new Standard Operating Procedures to curb frivolous complaints, which had previously overwhelmed the bureau. Under these new measures, complainants must now submit an affidavit and face severe penalties if their claims are false.
In efforts to enhance efficiency, NAB has also established special facilitation desks for both the general public and overseas Pakistanis. Butt encouraged LCCI to designate sector-specific focal persons and suggested regular meetings to ensure effective collaboration. He expressed optimism about Pakistan’s potential to achieve a trillion-dollar economy, with the business community as a pivotal partner.
LCCI President Mian Abuzar Shad hailed NAB as a key institution in promoting accountability and transparency. He pointed out the detrimental effects of corruption on the economy and called for stricter penalties for financial misconduct. Shad also raised concerns about capital flight, citing significant financial transfers to Dubai in the past year.
Former LCCI President Muhammad Ali Mian commended Chairman Butt’s efforts in fostering a business-friendly environment. The session concluded with calls for continued support for transparency initiatives and cooperation between government institutions and the business sector.
