National and International Human Rights Organizations Should Take Notice of the Atrocities Against Women in Sindh: Sindhiyani Tehreek

The central president of Sindhiyani Tehreek, Umera Samoon, has sounded the alarm on the severe injustices faced by women in Sindh, highlighting the increase in violence and deaths in recent reports. Speaking at a press conference at the Hyderabad Press Club today, Samoon appealed to national and international human rights organizations to take immediate action against the systematic attack on women’s rights in the region.

Alongside prominent figures like the central senior vice president Hasna Rahoojo and Advocate Kainat Dehri, Samoon elaborated on how the province’s leadership and influential elements have fostered an oppressive environment. According to Samoon, the legal and judicial systems, in collaboration with feudal and tribal authorities, promote a culture where women are unjustly declared “Kari” and killed under baseless accusations.

The press conference shed light on this alarming practice where tribal councils, led by chieftains, exploit family relations to incite violence against women, often resulting in their deaths at the hands of relatives. She explained that the motivation behind these acts is the desire to escalate disputes among tribes and consolidate power.

Samoon emphasized that the trend of burying women without proper rituals is concerning, equating it to treating them like animals. She lamented the transformation of Sindh’s districts into danger zones for women, a stark contrast to times when such incidents were rare. The number and acceptance of these honor killings have turned them into a lucrative business for those in power, which she termed the “industry” of violence.

Sindhiyani Tehreek’s revelation underscores the urgent need for reforms and interventions to protect women’s rights and lives, questioning the effectiveness of current governance and the justice system in safeguarding vulnerable populations.
