OIC Demands End To Kashmir Rights Violations At UNGA

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has called for an end to human rights abuses in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). This urgent appeal was made during a meeting of the OIC Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir held alongside the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 23, 2025.

The Contact Group, chaired by OIC Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs, Yousef M. Al-Dobeay, included representatives from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Trkiye, Niger, and Azerbaijan, along with a delegation representing the Kashmiri populace. The group reviewed the political and security landscape in IIOJK and voiced apprehensions about the deteriorating human rights situation, according to a statement released by the Pakistani Foreign Office.

Pakistan’s Special Assistant to the Prime Minister, Syed Tariq Fatemi, expressed gratitude for the OIC’s ongoing backing of the Kashmiri struggle. He denounced India’s endeavors to strengthen its control over the region through oppressive regulations, demographic manipulation, and escalated human rights infringements since August 2019. Fatemi reiterated Pakistan’s position that a fair resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir conflict, aligned with UN Security Council resolutions, is essential for regional harmony and stability.

Fatemi called upon the OIC to pressure India to halt its suppressive actions in IIOJK, liberate political detainees, revoke harsh laws, and acknowledge the Kashmiris’ fundamental right to self-determination. The Contact Group members reiterated their unwavering commitment to the Kashmiri people’s cause, highlighting the issue’s continued significance on the OIC’s agenda. They emphasized the necessity for renewed diplomatic initiatives to achieve a swift and peaceful resolution to the dispute, consistent with UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. The session concluded with the approval of a Joint Communiqué.
