The Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights of the National Assembly, led by Convenor Dr. Nikhat Shakeel Khan, organized a critical Consultative Session to confront the pressing issue of Out-of-School Children (OOSC) in Punjab. The session aimed to uncover the underlying causes of the OOSC problem and develop a tailored strategy to address the unique circumstances of the province.
Dr. Nikhat Khan welcomed a diverse group of participants, including members of the National Assembly, provincial leaders, and civil society representatives. She highlighted the multifaceted challenges contributing to OOSC, such as financial barriers, accessibility issues, and cultural norms.
Syed Ali Qasim Gillani, MNA and Advisory Council Member of the PCCR, shared successful initiatives from Multan and advocated for their expansion to other districts. He recommended measures including parental counseling, infrastructure development, and the establishment of IT labs to enhance educational opportunities.
MNA Asia Naz Tanoli called for raising the educational qualifications of teachers and promoting awareness through various media channels to address rural education challenges. She emphasized recognizing and sharing success stories of determined students and parents.
Dr. Shazia Sobia Aslam Soomro stressed the importance of programs teaching children personal safety and collaboration with NGOs to combat street child exploitation. She cited the Sindh Province as a model for effective interventions.
Ms. Sarah Ahmed, Convenor of the Provincial Caucus for Child Rights in Punjab, discussed partnerships with UNICEF and the Child Protection Bureau to launch campaigns for child welfare. She emphasized vocational training for girls to empower them economically.
Officials from the Education Department of Multan presented data and initiatives aimed at reducing OOSC numbers. Recommendations included enforcing compulsory education laws, increasing early morning schools, and enhancing school infrastructure.
The session concluded with Dr. Nikhat Shakeel Khan honoring MNA Syed Ali Qasim Gillani for his dedication to the cause, marking the session’s success with a symbolic group photograph.
