Power Division recovers Rs34bn in electricity theft crackdown

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: In an aggressive move against power theft, the Power Division recovered a substantial amount of Rs 34 billion from individuals apprehended in the course of an extensive nationwide crackdown on electricity theft so far, according to a report on Monday.

Prompted by a decision from the government and military leadership in September, the initiative aimed to combat electricity theft across the country.

According to a Power Division report, 197 government employees associated with relevant institutions were suspended, and 25,142 individuals were arrested in connection with electricity theft. The Rs34 billion recovered during the crackdown marks a significant reduction in the losses incurred by the Power Division.

The annual loss in the national grid for the current year is estimated at Rs 589 billion out of which Rs 199 billion is attributed to different regions such as ex-Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FTA), Balochistan, Tubewells, and Azad Kashmir.
