Islamabad, December 28, 2018 (PPI-OT): A two day Envoys Conference on Economic Diplomacy was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Islamabad on 27-28 December, 2018. The Conference was organized by Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce and the Board of Investment.
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Minister of Finance, Asad Umar; Advisor to the Prime Minister on Commerce, Abdul Razzak Dawood; Advisor to the Prime Minister on Institutional Reforms, Dr. Ishrat Hussain and Chairman Board of Investment, Haroon Sharif participated in the Conference. In addition, representatives of Public and Private Sectors as well as government institutions attended. Participants inter alia, included representatives from Pakistan Business Council, FPCCI, Farmers Associations of Pakistan, Alitheia Capital, JW-SEZ Group, Gul Ahmed Textile, OICCI, Gree and NRSP.
Pakistan’s Ambassadors to Japan, Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, UAE, Turkey, UK, Spain, Italy and Germany made presentations in the Conference. The Conference focused on how to scale up trade and investment – critical to Pakistan’s economic revival. At the conclusion of the Conference, the recommendations based on inputs of the participants were presented to the Prime Minister.
In his remarks, Foreign Minister stressed that Economic Diplomacy should constitute the core of Pakistan’s foreign policy in a changing global environment. Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with other stakeholders must devise a strategy to promote trade, attract investment, and seek new markets for our exports.
Prime Minister Imran Khan graced the concluding session of the Conference. He appreciated the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for holding the Envoys Conference with collaboration of key stakeholders responsible for foreign trade and investment. He lauded professionalism of Pakistan’s Envoys and directed that they should effectively engage diaspora abroad who are a great asset for Pakistan. He emphasized that concerted efforts should be undertaken to protect the interests of overseas Pakistanis, in particular, working class Pakistanis. He added that team work among Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Commerce and Board of Investment is a key for our success in the economic diplomacy. He stated that efforts should be intensified for exploring new markets for Pakistani products in Africa and Latin America.
