PTI Lawyers Forum Decries Constitutional Changes as ‘Direct Assault on Judicial Independence’

A senior member of the PTI Insaf Lawyers Forum today described the 26th and 27th Constitutional Amendments as a direct attack on judicial independence and the foundational principles of Pakistan’s constitutional framework, warning the proposed changes could inflict severe and lasting damage on the credibility of the justice system.

Advocate Farhan Javed Memon, a prominent lawyer of the Sindh High Court, in a statement articulated that the amendments pave the way for interference in judicial powers, appointments, and administrative affairs.

He asserted that PTI’s position remains unequivocal: without an autonomous judiciary, neither democracy can survive nor can citizens’ fundamental rights be protected. He characterized any attempt to undermine judicial autonomy as an infringement upon the constitutional rights of the populace.

The senior lawyer further noted that repeated alterations to the Constitution have become a perilous trend, aimed at manipulating judicial outcomes for political convenience. He cautioned that such amendments risk pushing the nation towards political turmoil, institutional imbalance, and a deepening constitutional crisis.

Advocate Memon stressed the urgent need for the legal community to defend judicial independence, which he termed essential for upholding the rule of law. ‘We will not accept any anti-people decision that undermines democracy or weakens the judiciary,’ he declared.

He also referenced the case of Imran Khan, stating he has been fighting for the supremacy of the Constitution while being imprisoned for over two years in what Memon described as politically motivated and baseless cases.

Condemning the alleged mistreatment of Khan’s sisters the previous night, he called it a ‘shocking display of authoritarianism’ and stated that the nation can no longer remain a silent spectator.

Reiterating the Insaf Lawyers Forum’s conviction, Advocate Memon stated that Pakistan urgently requires a strong, impartial, and fully empowered judiciary. He demanded the immediate withdrawal of the amendments and urged the government to govern strictly within the true spirit of the Constitution, emphasizing that the country’s stability and future depend on it.
