Punjab govt to restore free WiFi service in five districts

LAHORE: The PML-N led Punjab government has decided to restore free WiFi service in five districts of the province.

According to a report, the provincial government will restore and resume free WiFi service in five districts – Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad and Bahawalpur. The PML-N government had in its previous stint launched Free WiFi service to empower people through technology in a bid to bridge the digital divide by providing free internet access.

Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz took notice of the non-functioning of around 106 free Wifi spots across the province and ordered the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) to restore the services within a week. The government will allocate funds for the free WiFi in the budget of the coming fiscal year.

The Punjab chief minister also ordered PITB to take measures to provide these services to other districts of the province as well. Pertinent to note that the services were non-operational due to the non-payment of the bills pending from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government.
