Sindh Government Announces Major Development Package of Over Rs110 Billion to Rebuild Karachi’s Infrastructure

The Sindh government on Wednesday announced a massive development package of over Rs110 billion for Karachi, aimed at rebuilding the city’s infrastructure and addressing severe traffic congestion through a strategic partnership with the Frontier Works Organization (FWO).

The decision was finalized in a meeting at the Chief Minister House where Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah met with a delegation led by FWO Director-General Major General Abdul Sami.

The meeting was attended by key officials of the provincial and city governments, including Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, and the Finance Secretary.

Chief Minister Shah expressed his vision to elevate the city to the standards of the world’s best cities, stating, “We want to implement a comprehensive development plan for Karachi.”

Detailing the financial allocation, the chief minister announced an initial package of Rs84.796 billion for the city’s development, with an additional approved amount of Rs26.20 billion included.

Several major projects have also been announced to tackle key traffic issues. These include the construction of a major road connecting Jinnah Avenue of the M-9 Motorway to the city’s main artery, Shahrah-e-Faisal.

An underpass will be constructed from the Printing Press area towards Shahrah-e-Faisal to alleviate traffic congestion at Malir Halt. A new flyover is also planned from the airport towards Star Gate to provide direct access to Shahrah-e-Faisal.

Another significant flyover will be built at Sohrab Goth, which the chief minister identified as a key entry point to the city that experiences severe traffic congestion.

Further road projects include the construction of Hawke’s Bay Road from Y-junction to Machli Chowk and a new road from Masroor Base to the Truck Stand, designed for both commercial and heavy traffic.

The comprehensive scheme includes a wide range of measures, including the construction of 443 internal roads in various districts of the city and the development of 26 roads under the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC). Nine specific projects have been designed for traffic management, while improvements to existing parks and flyovers will also be undertaken.

During the meeting, it was decided that a joint team of engineers, comprising senior officials from the FWO, Local Government Department, and KMC, would immediately begin work on the project designs.

The chief minister set a strict timeline, directing that all issues related to designs and utility shifting be resolved by February 2026.

The Sindh Chief Minister ordered that the practical development work on these projects must commence from March 2026.
