Situation in IOK one of greatest rights crises

Srinagar, June 02, 2019 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, senior APHC leader and the Chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai has said that situation in Kashmir has become one of the greatest human rights crises in history, marked by wanton killings, detentions and disappearances at the hands of Indian occupational forces.

Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai in a statement issued in Srinagar said the international forums like OIC and the Security Council should take concrete action to effectively protect civilians in the occupied territory. He said the United Nations has failed to fulfill its duties throughout its history. He reiterated his appeal to the world community to resolve the Kashmir dispute in the interest of humanity.

Shab-e-Qadr was observed with religious zeal and gaiety across Jammu and Kashmir. People offered nightlong prayers and recited holy Quran in mosques and shrines across occupied Kashmir. The biggest congregation was held at Hazratbal Shrine in Srinagar where thousands of people joined special prayers. Hurriyat forum Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq delivered a sermon after Taraveeh prayers.

Banners carrying photos of Kashmiri martyred youth and Pakistani flags were hoisted at the gate of Srinagar’s Jamia Masjid in Srinagar. An Indian soldier committed suicide by hanging himself with a tree at 16 Corps unit in Nagrota area of Jammu district. It is the second such incident in the past two days as earlier an Indian army officer of colonel rank committed suicide in Leh district. This incident raised the number of such deaths amongst the Indian troops and police personnel to 428 in occupied Kashmir since January 2007 till date.

Meanwhile, the 14th session of the OIC Summit in Makkah reiterated its principled support for the legitimate right to self-determination of the people of Jammu and Kashmir in accordance with UN resolutions. Referring to the UN Kashmir report of 2018, the final communiqué of the summit called for expedited establishment of a UN Commission of Inquiry to investigate the grave human rights violations in IOK. The Conference approved Mr Yousef Aldobeay of Saudi Arabia as OIC’s special envoy for Jammu and Kashmir.
