Allama Shabbir Hassan Maisami, Central Secretary General of the Shia Ulema Council Pakistan, has warned that stagnant rainwater poses a serious epidemic threat in Karachi. Following recent rains, streets and roads have been submerged, raising fears of widespread disease.
Scheme 33, a densely populated area, has been particularly affected, resembling a vast lake, with a complete absence of government or municipal agencies. Maisami criticized this neglect of Karachi, lamenting the treatment of the country’s highest tax-paying city as an unwanted burden.
Karachi’s infrastructure has been severely damaged, turning short journeys into agonizing ordeals lasting several hours. Despite these conditions, municipal authorities insist on presenting a picture of normalcy. Maisami accused Mayor Murtaza Wahab and his administration of completely failing to address the city’s problems.
Expensive roads are crumbling, and basic amenities like water and sanitation remain unresolved despite the resources available to municipal institutions. Maisami questioned who citizens should turn to for help amidst these failures.
