The Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PCMEA) has called for urgent intervention from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and the government to address critical challenges threatening the country’s hand-knotted carpet industry, citing procedural delays and rising production costs as major impediments to global competitiveness.
According to a press release issued today by the Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PCMEA),A six-member PCMEA delegation, led by Chairman Mian Atiq-ur-Rehman and Patron-in-Chief Abdul Latif Malik, conveyed these concerns during a meeting with senior SBP officials. The representatives detailed the significant hurdles confronting the carpet export sector.
The association strongly requested that the SBP instruct all commercial banks to organize regular awareness sessions on new policies and regulatory frameworks. The delegation emphasized that such sessions are vital for both exporters and banking staff to ensure a clear understanding of updated requirements and to prevent delays in export-related operations.
In response, officials from the central bank gave assurances that the issues raised would be reviewed on a priority basis. They committed that every possible measure would be taken to facilitate exporters and streamline procedural matters.
Separately, during an internal review meeting, PCMEA Chairman Mian Atiq-ur-Rehman and Vice Chairman Riaz Ahmed stated that comprehensive efforts are in progress to resolve the industry’s difficulties and enhance its export potential. The discussion also addressed logistical issues at the Torkham border, with strategies considered to ensure smoother trade flows.
Association office-bearers reiterated their commitment to restoring the handmade carpet industry to its former prominence, vowing to spare no effort. They appealed to the government for direct support, specifically requesting measures to lower production costs, guarantee the availability of skilled artisans, and provide freight subsidies to remain competitive in global markets.
Looking ahead, the PCMEA leadership highlighted a significant opportunity for the sector with three major international exhibitions for hand-made carpets scheduled for the upcoming year. They described these events as a prime chance for Pakistan to showcase its craftsmanship, expand its global market presence, and boost export orders, stressing the need for immediate and thorough preparations.
