Thatta Municipal Committee’s savings budget approved, no new taxes imposed

The Thatta Municipal Committee presented its 202526 budget, which includes demands for financial austerity and an investigation into alleged corruption in the public health department. The financial plan, unanimously approved on June 24, estimates an income of 638.338 million rupees against expenditures of 619.836 million rupees.

Addressing the council, Chairman Ada Muhammad Memon expressed concern over the department’s lack of consultation with the committee on public projects. He criticized the practice of connecting new projects to existing ones, rendering them useless, and cited unused pipes as an example of public resource wastage.

Memon specifically highlighted the second phase of Thatta’s water supply project, sourced from the Berachi Mori. He claimed that the natural flow of water to the reservoirs was tampered with for financial gain and demanded an immediate investigation. He urged MNA Sadiq Ali Memon, Provincial Minister Haji Ali Hassan Zardari, and Syed Riaz Hussain Shah Shirazi to initiate a highlevel inquiry into the alleged corruption within the department and take notice of the concerned engineer’s conduct.

The chairman also acknowledged the council’s financial constraints, which hinder largescale projects. He outlined the need to rebuild the dilapidated municipal office and proposed converting the old town hall into a womenonly recreational area, “Parda Park.” A request for 150 million rupees in funding for these initiatives has been submitted to the Sindh Chief Minister.

Furthermore, the council unanimously demanded the repair of the dilapidated road from Thatta Traffic Post to Dargah Babu Shah, which falls under the Coastal Authority’s jurisdiction. Memon stated that written requests to the authority have been ignored and held them responsible for any potential accidents on the damaged road. Two councilors boycotted the proceedings, protesting their alleged exclusion from decisionmaking.
