Unresolved Kashmir dispute major threat to peace: Mirwaiz

Srinagar, March 06, 2019 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the Chairman of Hurriyat forum, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, has said that any change in the disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir would face stiff resistance as people and resistance leadership are on the same page.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq addressing a meeting at his residence in Srinagar expressed concern over the escalating tensions between Pakistan and India saying the region “is in great danger of destruction”. He said he has repeatedly been saying that war is no solution to problems between India and Pakistan especially for the Kashmir dispute and its precarious offshoots.

“The Kashmir dispute is purely a political and human issue that needs to be resolved by means of sustained dialogue and not by any war or skirmishes,” the Mirwaiz said. “It has again become evident that non-resolution of Kashmir issue is a major threat to peace for entire South Asia,” he added.

He further said while the region is facing threat of further escalation, New Delhi is making efforts and ploys to undermine the Kashmir dispute and muzzle the voice of Kashmiri people by extremely coercive measures.

“Oppressive measures and threats to muzzle voices in Kashmir by jailing pro-resolution leaders, imposing curfew, and launching a massive crackdown on the socio-religious leaders, and imams will be met with stiff resistance. In this situation, people and leadership have to remain united to face the onslaught unleashed on us,” he said.

The Mirwaiz termed the ban on Kashmir’s socio-religious organisation Jamaat-e-Islami as highly undemocratic, unconstitutional and uncalled for, saying that imposing five-year ban on Jamaat amounts to direct intervention in the religious rights and practices, which deserves highest form of condemnation.

The Hurriyat forum Chairman said India’s “fresh oppression in the form of NIA and ED raids on homes of pro-freedom leaders and common people is aimed at intimidating leadership and people, which was destined to fail”. These agencies are trying to defame the resistance leaders and frame them in fictitious and fake cases to legally put them in jails. On Article 35-A, the Mirwaiz said every attempt aimed at diluting or tinkering with it would face stiff resistance by all sections of the society of Kashmir.
