US Envoy Praises Punjab’s Vibrant Culture as a Positive Face of Pakistan

United States Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker described the culture of Punjab as a ‘reflection of Pakistan’s beautiful heritage’ during a visit to the provincial pavilion at the annual Lok Mela 2025. She stated that the skills of local artists, the sophistication of handicrafts, and regional music present a positive and diverse image of Pakistan to the international community.

According to a report by Punjab Arts Council today, upon her arrival at the event, organized by the National Institute of Folk and Traditional Heritage (Lok Virsa), Ms. Baker was received by Ghulam Saghir Shahid, Executive Director of the Punjab Council of the Arts (PUCAR), and Muhammad Shakoor, Director of the Punjab Arts Council Rawalpindi.

The American diplomat toured the pavilion, observing stalls that displayed a range of handicrafts, folk music exhibits, traditional cuisine, and fine arts. During her inspection, she interacted with the artisans and craftspeople present. Ms. Baker also specifically commended the efforts of the Punjab Arts Council in connecting the younger generation with traditional arts.

Ghulam Sagheer Shahid, the Executive Director of PUCAR, remarked that the council, in collaboration with the Punjab government, is actively working to promote culture, arts, and traditional crafts throughout the province. “Our aim is to keep our folk heritage alive and provide opportunities related to it to the youth. Lok Mela 2025 is a strong link in this chain,’ he stated.

The Punjab Pavilion features a structure inspired by Multani architecture and serves as a significant attraction at the fair. Exhibits include blue pottery, Phulkari embroidery, camel skin lamps, woodwork, and miniature paintings, alongside displays of traditional musical instruments.

Managed by the Punjab Council of the Arts, the pavilion has played a key role in highlighting the province”s cultural heritage, with folk songs and mystical melodies contributing to the atmosphere for visitors.
