Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab today announced the construction of a monument at Khaliq Dina Hall to celebrate the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists’ (PFUJ) Platinum Jubilee.
The structure will honor the journalistic community’s contributions to freedom of expression and democracy. Wahab, speaking at the monument’s foundation stone laying ceremony, recognized the media”s crucial part in these fundamental rights. The event was attended by PFUJ officials, including President Tahir Hasan and General Secretary Sardar Liaqat Kashmiri, and numerous journalists like Habib Khan Ghori, Mazhar Abbas, and others.
Wahab, highlighting his familial ties to the press, pledged to personally finance the monument”s construction, with any excess costs covered by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC). He stressed the importance of leaving a positive legacy for future generations, emphasizing the press”s role as the “fourth pillar of the state.” He urged continued dedication to the profession”s values, advocating for using writing as a tool for advancement and societal betterment. He assured the monument would be a grand tribute to the PFUJ”s 75th anniversary.
The mayor recognized the significant influence of traditional and digital media platforms in public discourse. He committed to addressing issues faced by media professionals through the KMC. He noted the symbiotic link between journalists and local authorities, highlighting how media coverage prompts action on urban concerns.
Wahab reiterated the press”s constructive impact throughout Pakistan”s history, from the independence movement to the present day. He shared his family”s deep involvement in journalism, mentioning his father, Wahab Siddiqui’s, lifelong career and his mother”s service on the KMC media committee.
PFUJ President Tahir Hasan expressed his appreciation for the mayor”s support for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The PFUJ presented Wahab with a commemorative shield.
