Year in Review: 15 Legislators Passed Away during 2025

The year 2025 saw the passing of 15 elected representatives who had served in Pakistan’s Parliament and Provincial Assemblies.

According to a report by Free and Fair Election Network released today, these included six Members of the National Assembly (MNAs), five Senators, two Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPAs) from Punjab, and one MPA from Sindh. As many as seven of the deceased lawmakers were serving members of incumbent legislatures, while the remaining eight had served in previous parliamentary terms. Below are the brief profiles of deceased lawmakers:

Syed Muhammad Asghar Shah was a three-time MNA from Punjab’s Bahawalnagar district. He was first elected from NA-144 Bahawalnagar-I in the General Election 1990 as an independent candidate. In 2002, he was elected as a Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q) candidate. He was re-elected as an independent in 2013 and later joined Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). He contested the General Election 2018 as a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate but remained runner-up. He also served as Parliamentary Secretary for Water Affairs. He passed away on January 15, 2025, after a prolonged illness.

Nawab Yousaf Talpur was a sitting MNA from Sindh’s Umerkot district. He was affiliated with the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarian (PPPP). He began his parliamentary career as MPA from PS-55 Tharparkar-III constituency in 1977. He secured 96 percent of the polled votes in his first election. From General Elections (GE) 1993 to GE-2024, he was elected six times as MNA, losing only in GE 1997. He served as Federal Minister for Food, Agriculture, and Livestock from 1994 to 1996. He passed away on February 18, 2025, after a prolonged illness.

Malak Said Ahmad Khan was a former MNA from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kohistan district. He was elected from NA-17 Kohistan as an independent candidate in the GE-2013 and later joined PML-N. He passed away on March 2, 2025, due to natural causes.

Hafiz Hussain Ahmad was a former MNA from Balochistan’s Quetta district, and a two-time Senator from the province. He was affiliated with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Pakistan. He was first elected as MNA from NA-197 Quetta-cum-Chagai in the GE-1988. He later served as Senator from Balochistan during the 1991-94 and 2002-07 terms. He passed away on March 19, 2025, after a prolonged illness.

Chaudhary Arshad Javaid Warraich was a sitting MPA from Punjab’s Sialkot district. He was affiliated with PML-N. It was his third consecutive term as MPA. He passed away on April 7, 2025, due to natural causes.

Taj Haider was a sitting Senator from Sindh and a senior leader of the PPP. He was first elected to the Senate in July 1995 and was re-elected in 2012 and 2021. He was among the founding members of the PPP and served as its General Secretary since 2023. He passed away on April 8, 2025, after a brief illness.

Professor Sajid Mir was a six-time Senator from Punjab and was affiliated with Markazi Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith. He was first elected to the Senate in 1994 as a Pakistan Muslim League candidate and remained a member of the Upper House until his death. He passed away on May 3, 2025, due to illness.

Jamshed Thomas was a former MNA elected on a minority-reserved seat in GE-2018. He belonged to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Peshawar district, and was affiliated with PTI. He passed away on May 19, 2025, following a head injury sustained in an accident at his residence in Belgium.

Abbas Afridi was a former Senator from the erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). He was elected in 2009 as an independent candidate, and later joined PML-N. He served as Federal Minister for Textile. He subsequently contested National Assembly elections as a PML-N candidate from Kohat but was unsuccessful. He passed away on June 5, 2025, in an explosion.

Mian Muhammad Azhar was a sitting MNA from Punjab’s Lahore district. He has been elected to the National Assembly thrice, first in General Election 1988 and then in GE-1997 as a Pakistan Muslim League candidate. In the General Election 2024, he was elected for third time, now as a PTI candidate. He also served as Governor of Punjab from 1990 to 1993 and Mayor of Lahore from 1987 to 1990. He was earlier affiliated with PML-N, later co-founded PML-Q, and subsequently joined PTI in 2011. He passed away on July 25, 2025, due to natural causes.

Roshan Din Junejo was a three-time former MNA from Sindh’s Sanghar district. He was affiliated with the PPPP. He also served as District Nazim Sanghar. He passed away on September 15, 2025, due to illness.

Agha Siraj Durrani was a seven-time MPA from Sindh’s Shikarpur district. He served as Speaker of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh for two consecutive terms from 2013 to 2023. He passed away on October 15, 2025, after an illness.

Irfan-ul-Haq Siddiqui was a sitting Senator from Punjab, elected in March 2021. He was affiliated with PML-N and also served as Adviser to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on National Affairs. He passed away on November 10, 2025.

Mian Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo was a former MNA and four-time MPA from Punjab’s Okara district. He served as the Speaker Provincial Assembly Punjab thrice, and was elected as Chief Minister Punjab three times. He remained affiliated with Pakistan Muslim League Junejo, Pakistan Muslim League Jinnah, Pakistan Muslim League(Q), PPPP and PTI during his political career. He died on December 16, 2025, after prolonged illness.

Irfan Shafi Khokhar was a sitting MPA from Punjab’s Lahore district. He was elected from PP-167 Lahore-XXIII in the General Election 2024. He passed away on December 21, 2025, due to natural causes.
