350 women harassment cases disposed of in two years: CS told

KARACHI:Chief Secretary Sindh Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah Wednesday visited the offices of provincial ombudsman in Karachi.

He was welcomed by Ombudsman Justice (Rtd) Shahnawaz Tariq and other officials including Director Muhammad Khalid Khan. The CS was apprised that the Ombudsman institution takes legal action against those who harassed the working women at their workplaces devilishly including sexuality.

Shah was informed that during last two years, the Ombudsman dealt with 388 cases of women harassment, of those 350 had been disposed of while 38 are in process.

He was also apprised that 1734 private entrepreneurs pertained to the task under reference are on board, the punishment of removal from services/retirement, stoppage of increment etc and penalty to paid to the harassed women is imposed under the rules and law. The cases are registered and examined transparently, while seminars and workshops have been organized in all division for awareness to this effect.

Shah was also briefed that law is in progress to authorize the Ombudsman for taking suo motto action and to transfer the appeal and complain mutually. The Ombudsman informed that the establishment of regional offices would also be undertaken soon with a view to ensure accessibility to the complainants at the nearest places, who may launch complaints by post, telephone, fax and/or whats app.

The Chief Secretary expressed satisfaction over the progress and advised to publicize the task systematically aimed at benefitting the affected women. He also instructed to gear up the circle of services at gross-root level.
