Environment-friendly deep heat sterilizer installed in CHK

KARACHI: Dr Ruth KM Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) management has installed an environment friendly Deep-Heat Steriliser machine (advanced incinerator) for safe disposal of the medical waste.

The first time in Sindh province this advanced machine has been installed in a government-run hospital for disposal of medical waste including disposable syringes, drips, urine or blood bags, needles, fluids and other used wastage which are harmful for medical staff, visiting patients as well as, environment if not safely disposed of.

Additional Medical Superintendent CHK Dr Arif Niaz, while talking to PPI, said under hospital waste management plan, a strategy had been devised for proper and safe disposal of medical waste as per secretary health Sindh’s directives. He said a Deep Heat Steriliser has already been successfully installed in health facility for disposal of the medical waste generated in the hospital round the clock.

He explained that CHK generates around 2500 kilograms of infected and non-infected medical waste in 24 hours out which 1300kg id infected medical waste like syringes, drips, urine or blood bags, needles, fluids and other used items which are disinfected through sterilizer under standard operating procedure(SOP). He informed that 75 to 90kg medical waste is disinfected in one hour.

He informed that Health Department Sindh has purchased some five new Deep-Heat Sterilisers machines for the government-run hospitals and the CHK is the first health facility where this machines has been installed and made operational.

He said old incinerator machine was generated pollution which was harmful for human health. He said the disinfected medical waste is handed over to the Karachi Municipal Corporation (KMC) for disposal.
