ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has said its primary aim at the United Nations with regard to Jammu and Kashmir is to secure the recognized right of self-determination for Kashmiri people.
According to a press release received here Tuesday from New York, in a message on UN Day, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Munir Akram said Pakistan has welcomed the UN Secretary-General statement that the Jammu and Kashmir dispute should be resolved on the basis of the UN Charter and the Security Council resolutions.
He said the UN Charter and resolutions prescribe that the final disposition of the state of Jammu and Kashmir will be determined through a free and fair plebiscite under the UN auspices. Munir Akram said Pakistan will continue to press for the implementation of the UN Security Council resolutions on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.
He said the UN Charter prescribed strict adherence to the principles of non-use of force, self-determination of people, respect for state sovereignty and territorial integrity, and non-interference in their internal affairs. He said although the United Nations has been unable to achieve universal peace, a devastating Third World War has been averted- so far, many regional conflicts were resolved or contained because most States have adhered to the UN Charter’s principles.
