In a unique gesture blending art with advocacy, Federal Minister for the Board of Investment (BOI), Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh, purchased an original painting by a noted artist during a high-level meeting on Friday, with all proceeds designated for charity to underscore the government’s support for women’s financial independence.
The significant discussion involved Ms. Gulmina Bilal Ahmad, Chairperson of the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTCC), Ms. Sameena Nazir, Executive Director of PODA, and artist Asmaa Zia, focusing on strategies to bolster female economic participation across Pakistan. The acquisition of Zia’s artwork was highlighted as a novel example of how creative industries can drive social impact.
Minister Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh emphasized the administration’s resolve to integrate women more fully into the formal economy, from skilled professions to small and medium-sized businesses. He identified NAVTCC as a pivotal institution for closing skill gaps and creating employment pathways, particularly for the female workforce.
‘When women succeed, economies grow – and so does national prosperity,’ the Minister stated, framing women-led enterprises in skilled trades and creative fields as a powerful investment opportunity for the nation.
The initiative received praise from civil society leaders. Ms. Sameena Nazir of PODA described the move as ‘an important step in recognizing that women’s empowerment is not just a social responsibility, but an economic necessity.’ Ms. Zia expressed her gratitude for the chance to contribute her work to a cause directly aiding women’s progress.
The Minister also pointed to recent governmental reforms designed to foster a more conducive business climate. He cited the elimination of 80% of superfluous restrictions on the business community and the passage of the Aasaan Karobar Act in the National Assembly as measures that will specifically benefit enterprises and investment ventures owned by women.
This meeting signifies a renewed and integrated approach to female empowerment in Pakistan. Minister Sheikh reiterated that the Board of Investment remains dedicated to facilitating investment and championing sustainable, inclusive economic development throughout the country.
