SMEDA’s Certification Initiative Gains Momentum with Entrepreneurial Interest

LAHORE: The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) has reported significant progress in its SME Certification and International Accreditation Grant Program, an initiative aimed at enhancing the global competitiveness of Pakistani businesses through international certifications. The program, a collaboration with the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB), offers matching grants to SMEs to boost their export potential and market linkages.

According to the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority, the program has attracted considerable attention from entrepreneurs, with 75 applications received from various regions across Pakistan. Of these, 26 applications have been approved following a thorough review by a dedicated committee, while 41 applications are currently under evaluation. The program aims to support 100 SMEs in the current fiscal year, aligning with government efforts to bolster the economic framework by facilitating global competitiveness among small and medium enterprises.

Officials emphasize the transparent nature of the program, highlighting a first-come, first-served application process designed to support eligible SMEs. Special encouragement is extended to women entrepreneurs and startups, who are invited to apply for certification grants through a streamlined and transparent application process. The initiative is seen as a key government strategy to eliminate financial and technical obstacles faced by SMEs, offering them the necessary resources to meet international quality, safety, and compliance standards.

The program's objectives are clear: to promote enterprise efficiency and competitiveness, protect consumer rights, and foster socioeconomic development. Certification is seen as a crucial step for businesses seeking to access foreign markets, enhance internal systems, and build trust with financial institutions and buyers. Officials note that certified SMEs gain better access to finance and supply chains, facilitating expansion and operational growth.

SMEDA encourages interested businesses to apply through its website or the SME Registration Portal, offering a free and accessible registration process. This initiative marks a shift toward sustainable business growth, with SMEDA actively engaging entrepreneurs through awareness sessions and digital outreach efforts.
