Lahore: Federal Minister for IT and Telecom, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, inaugurated an online membership portal at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), marking a significant step towards digital transformation in Pakistan. At the Indus AI Week conference, Khawaja announced upcoming plans for a 600 MHz spectrum auction aimed at enhancing mobile internet capacity, which is expected to improve digital services, e-commerce, and e-governance across the country.
According to Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the new online portal makes LCCI the first chamber in the nation to offer digital membership services. The portal is designed to facilitate businesses in obtaining memberships and accessing information, thereby fostering business collaboration. Khawaja highlighted this initiative as part of the government's broader strategy to promote the digital economy, emphasizing the importance of technology in streamlining business processes and boosting the national economy.
The event was attended by notable figures including LCCI President Faheem Ur Rehman Saigol, Senior Vice President Tanveer Ahmad Sheikh, and other industry leaders. Saigol underscored the potential of artificial intelligence to transform various sectors and stressed the need for the business community to integrate modern technologies to enhance global competitiveness. He assured the Chamber's support in advancing technology adoption and improving the business environment.
Khawaja also discussed government initiatives to improve digital accessibility, including the "Smartphone for All" policy and efforts to reskill the workforce in artificial intelligence. She emphasized the importance of inclusive participation in the digital economy, particularly for youth, women, and people with disabilities. The Minister reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring safe and responsible use of digital platforms through robust cybersecurity measures and global-standard regulations aimed at attracting investment in Pakistan's IT and AI sectors.
