Founder of Pakistani pop music Nazia Hassan’s birthday to be celebrated tomorrow

The birthday of Nazia Hassan, recognized as the founder of Pakistani pop music, will be celebrated on April 3, paying tribute to the life of an artist whose revolutionary career was cut short by her untimely death at the age of 35.

Born on April 3, 1965, into an educated and cultured family in Karachi, Nazia Hassan is credited with introducing a new trend in music to the subcontinent with her melodious voice and modern style. Her early passion for music was strongly encouraged by her parents. She received her education from renowned institutions in Karachi before earning a degree in Business Administration from Richmond American University in London.

At the age of 15, her career soared when her song “Aap Jaisa Koi” was released for the 1980 Indian film “Qurbani.” The immense success of the song earned her a Filmfare Award, making her the youngest singer to receive this prestigious honor.

During the 1980s, Nazia and her brother Zoheb Hassan set a new path, pioneering the pop music genre in Pakistan. Their albums were a sensation among the country’s youth, and their tunes are now considered timeless classics that remain popular decades later.

In addition to her musical achievements, Nazia Hassan was also a dedicated social activist. She supported children’s welfare and worked with the United Nations on various humanitarian projects, consistently advocating for better education and health for women and children in Pakistan.

Her personal life included a marriage to Mirza Ishtiaq Baig in 1995, which ended in separation in 2000. In her final years, Nazia Hassan was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in London on August 13, 2000, after a prolonged illness.

Despite her passing, Nazia Hassan’s influence endures. Her songs continue to resonate with new generations, and many contemporary artists have paid tribute by remixing her work. Her unique style and simplicity are still remembered today, solidifying her status as the first and greatest superstar of Pakistani pop.

Nazia Hassan achieved a level of fame at a young age that few artists are fortunate enough to attain. Her timeless melodies still grace gatherings today, ensuring that her name is etched in the golden chapter of Pakistan’s music industry.
