Quetta/ Mastung: Balochistan Awami Party candidate for PB35 Nawabzada Siraj Raisani and some 20 other people were injured in a blast at Dareen Garh area of Mastung on Friday.

Levies sources said the blast hit a gathering of Raisani during his electioneering drive. The injured were being shifted to hospitals, said district administration sources.

Police arrest 42 alleged criminals across Sindh

KARACHI: Police on Friday claimed to have apprehended 42 criminals and recovered arms in different cities of Sindh province during the last 24 hours.

According to a Sindh police spokesman, during targeted operations and raids, Karachi police detained 10 absconders, two proclaimed offenders from different parts of the city.

During operations against criminals in Sukkur, Shaheed Banazirabad and Larkana, police arrested four absconders, 19 proclaimed offenders and seven robbers.

The police also recovered four Kalashnikovs with rounds, three TT pistols, two repeaters and four motorbikes from their possession.

Police have registered FIRs against the accused and started further investigation.

NAB team, helicopters sent to Lahore airport

Lahore: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has sent its team and two helicopters to the Lahore airport to arrest former Prime Minister Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Mariyam Nawaz who are scheduled to reach here this night.

Tight security is ensured at and around the airport. However, PML-N has accused that the caretaker government has arrested their hundreds of activists from Lahore and other cities.

So far 15 people including Siraj Raisani are termed dead while some 25 other people are injured, who are being shifted to hospitals of Queeta and other cities, said district administration sources. Condition of several injured was said to be critical.

Opinion Poll: (49% Pakistanis claim their health today is relatively better than previous year: Poll)

ISLAMABAD: According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup and Gilani Pakistan, half Pakistanis (49%) claim their health today is relatively better (somewhat better / much better) than the previous year.

A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked “How do you see your health in comparison to the previous year?”

In response to this question, 20% said it is much better than previous year, 29% said it is somewhat better than previous year, 37% said it is the same as previous year, 11% said it is somewhat worse than previous year, 2% said it is much worse than previous year while 1% did not know or did not wish to respond.

The study was released by Gilani Research Foundation and carried out by Gallup and Gilani Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International.

The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 1506 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, June 11 – June 18, 2018. Error margin is estimated to be approximately ± 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.

Top seed Faiza Zafar overpowered second seed Madina Zafar in the summit clash after dropping set registering a 11-7, 11-9, 11-13, 16-14 victory in 32 minutes.

In men’s climax, unexpected finalist Tayyab Aslam went on t oclaim the title beating second seed Farhan Zaman by 11-8, 10-12, 11-1, 11-8 score in 44 minutes.

KPC, CEJ-IBA conduct election reporting workshop

KARACHI:The Karachi Press Club in collaboration the Centre for Excellence in Journalism at the Institute of Business Administration (CEJ-IBA), Karachi conducted workshop on ‘Mobile Journalism and Election Coverage’ at the Karachi Press Club previous day.

The day started with a session on mobile journalism, conducted by trainer Manzar Elahi Turk. He introduced the concept of mobile journalism to reporters and shared tools and tips on how effectively they can use their phones to cover elections.

CEJ director Kamal Siddiqi spoke to the journalists about media ethics and the coverage of the upcoming elections. Journalists should be mindful of ethics and safety while reporting during elections, he advised. They should report but not become part of the elections, he added. “Journalists are observers not activists.”

Former Chief Editor Pakistan Press International (PPI) News Agency Farooq Moin spoke on how journalists must do their legwork ahead of the elections. They should stick to their work and not indulge in giving opinions, he said. “Journalist should have prior knowledge about election rules and regulations.”

Later, senior journalist Abul Hasanat conducted a session on different aspects of profiles a reporter should focus on while reporting on constituencies, “Look for past development projects and funds allocated for the constituency, then write about problems, issues faced by people living in those areas,” he advised.

CEJ lecturer Shahzeb Ahmed held a session on data journalism and how reporters can use data to tell stories. “Your stories can become more appealing and credible for readers when you incorporate elements of data and visuals,” he said.

The last sessions of the day were conducted by seasoned journalist Abdul Jabbar Nasir on pre and post-election analysis, reporting in the field on the elections day and how to report the election results.

Nasir, who has vast experience of covering the general elections, local governments’ elections and the by-elections in the metropolis, shared with the participants various techniques on drawing analysis of the contesting candidates and political parties as well as reporting the election results.

He told the journalists to carefully read the election nomination forms and election results forms of the Election Commission of Pakistan, as there were various sections that could provide important information and data.

He minutely covered various aspects needed to accurately report the polls results and how the journalists covering them should behave with the polling staff at the polling stations. He underscored the need for closely observing the atmosphere in the constituencies of the elections, timing of the votes and public turnout needed for comprehensive reporting on the polling day.

Karachi Press Club President Ahmed Khan Malik and Secretary Maqsood Yousfi lauded the collective efforts of the Karachi Press Club’s Skills Development Committee and the team of the Center for Excellence in Journalism-IBA for conducting ‘Mobile Journalism and Election Coverage Workshop.’

President and Secretary Karachi Press Club said that skill development workshops will be held around the year for KPC members.

In the end Secretary Maqsood Yousufi, Joint Secretary Naimat Khan, Secretary Skills Development Committee Naeem Akber Sahoutra and trainer Abdul Jabbar Nasir distributed certificates among the participants.
