Dua, her husband leaves for Lahore to appear in court

KARACHI: Dua Zehra and her husband Zaheer, a freewill marriage couple, have left for Lahore to appear before the Lahore High Court (LHC) in a case filed by her mother, police said Thursday.

Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday announced a reserved verdict in Dua Zehra case, allowing Dua to decide whether she want to live with her parents or the husband. The SHC, in its written verdict, observed that no evidence was found that the girl had been abducted. The court also stopped authorities concerned from registering abduction cases.

In a three-page written order, Justice Junaid Ghaffar said the court reached the verdict in line with the testimonies. “In light of all the evidence, this is not a case of kidnapping.”

In a statement in the court, Dua had said that she got married of her own free will. No one kidnapped her, and she wanted to go with her husband Zaheer.

However, on the permission of SHC, Dua yesterday met her parents following which her family claimed that Dua expressed her willingness to go with parents.

The father also appeared before the judge and asked him to review his decision as the girl wanted to go with them. The court, however, rejected the plea and said that the girl has given a statement on oath that she did not want to go with her parents.

“The statement on oath has an importance and we cannot believe your words when the girl has given a written statement in this regard,” the court said while admonishing the father.
