Experts and industry leaders have underscored the critical need to empower women in the aquaculture sector to foster economic self-sufficiency and bolster the national economy, highlighting the industry’s significant contribution to food security during an event marking World Fisheries Day.
According to the university statement today, the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore’s Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture observed the day at its Ravi Campus in Pattoki, organizing an awareness walk, a seminar, and a business idea competition under the theme ‘Blue Economy: Pathway to Sustainable Development’.
The event saw significant participation from public and private sector professionals, stakeholders, and academics. The awareness walk was led by Prof Dr Saima, Dean of the Faculty of Animal Production and Technology, and attended by key figures including Ravi Campus Principal Office Prof Dr Arshad Javid, Department Chairman Dr Muhammad Hafeez-ur-Rehman, Zarwa Enterprises CEO Minahl Yousaf, and Andleeb Kamal of Dhabeji Aquafood.
Addressing the seminar audience, Prof Dr Saima stated that fisheries and aquaculture play a remarkable role in the national economy and food security. She particularly stressed the importance of empowering women within the aquaculture field.
Dr Muhammad Hafeez-ur-Rehman detailed his department”s establishment of state-of-the-art Model Fish Processing and Value Addition Facilities. He explained the initiative aims to provide hands-on training and develop practical skills, enhancing resource utilization and promoting sustainability by converting processing waste into high-value products.
Echoing the call for female inclusion, Ms Minahil Yousaf emphasized that women must be encouraged to start their own aquaculture businesses to contribute to economic growth and become self-sufficient.
Ms Andleeb Kamal provided insights into modern shrimp culture operations practiced in Karachi, covering aspects like production systems and feed management. She commended the performance of UVAS graduates at their farms, noting their practical skills and entrepreneurial mindset significantly contribute to the success of shrimp and fish farming operations.
The seminar concluded with Prof Dr Saima, Prof Dr Arshad Javid, and Dr Muhammad Hafeez-ur-Rehman presenting a shield to the guest speakers and distributing certificates to the winners of the business ideas competition.
